Yellow Water Sparks Health Fears in Madurai's Sellur

Madurai: Yellow, discoloured drinking water flowing through pipelines has raised alarm among residents of the Sellur area in Madurai. They have demanded immediate rectification and the distribution of properly treated water.

For the past several days, contaminated water has been running through the pipelines, prompting fears that waterborne diseases could spread in the locality. Residents report that three cases of jaundice have been registered at the primary health centre in Sellur in recent days.

However, doctors have stated that there is no conclusive evidence linking the illness to the contaminated water. “There could be other possibilities, including contamination from overflowing sewage water puddles in the area,” a doctor said, adding that efforts are underway to identify the exact cause.

A senior corporation official explained that once complaints were received, the pipelines were shut off, and water was supplied to residents through lorries and tractors. “The contaminants originated from the older Vaigai I and Vaigai II water schemes, which are still active in some areas. They have now been shut down,” the official said.

“With the water level at the Vaigai dam at around 20 feet, contaminants are entering the water pipelines. A water level of 26 to 28 feet is required for clean drinking water supply,” the official added.

While some residents welcomed the supply of drinking water via tractors, others remain skeptical. “We do not know where this water is coming from. Instead of this, measures should be taken to treat the drinking water coming through the pipelines and resume that service,” said Shankar, a resident.

The official acknowledged that the pipelines need to be revamped and that the area would be brought under the Mullaperiyar drinking water scheme. “There are some issues regarding water pressure and supply under the Mullaperiyar scheme as well. Once these issues are resolved, work can commence,” the official said.
