German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced on Friday that intelligence assessments indicate a credible threat of an Islamist attack targeting the upcoming Berlin Pride event. Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, she confirmed that federal authorities have briefed all 16 German states and advised them to immediately review security protocols for major public gatherings, including subsequent Pride celebrations across the country.
Threat Assessment and Official Response
According to the minister, specific intelligence gathered in recent weeks points to a planned attack by Islamist extremists during the Berlin Pride parade, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of participants. Faeser stated that while no concrete plot has been foiled, the nature of the threat is serious enough to warrant heightened vigilance. She added that the federal police have been placed on alert and are coordinating with state law enforcement agencies.
“We are taking this threat very seriously. The signs are clear, and we must act proactively to protect the safety of all attendees,” Faeser said, as reported by Reuters. State-Level Security Review
In a directive issued earlier this week, the Interior Ministry instructed each of Germany’s 16 states to reassess their security arrangements for all major events, particularly those celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride. The review encompasses crowd control, surveillance, and emergency response plans. Several states have already announced increased police presence at Pride-related marches and gatherings.
The Berlin Pride event, scheduled for late July, is one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, attracting international visitors. Organizers have expressed support for the security measures while urging participants to remain vigilant.
