France Allows Visa-Free Transit for Indians from April 2026

NEW DELHI: Indian nationals can now transit through France without a transit visa, as the French government has implemented this change effective from April 10, 2026. Previously, Indians holding valid visas from the United States, Canada, Japan, or any European Union member state were exempt from the requirement of an airport transit visa while passing through French airports.

Background of the Policy Change

This development follows a similar announcement by Germany in January 2026, which also exempted Indian passport holders from needing a Schengen airport transit visa (Type A visa) when transiting through its international airports. The move is part of broader efforts to enhance travel convenience for Indian citizens.

Official Announcement from French Embassy

In a statement issued on Thursday, the French embassy confirmed: “With effect from April 10, 2026, Indian nationals possessing an ordinary passport are no longer required to hold an airport transit visa when passing through the international zone of airports located on French territory. This measure applies to passengers remaining in the international zone during a layover at a French airport en route to a third country.”

Government of India Confirmation

The external affairs ministry of India also issued a statement, noting: “The visa-free transit for Indian nationals transiting through French airports in the European territory has now been operationalised by the French Government. This follows an announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s visit to India in February 2026. Indian nationals transiting through the European territory of France exclusively by air will no longer require a transit visa with effect from April 10, 2026.”

Key Details for Travelers

  • Effective Date: April 10, 2026
  • Eligibility: Indian nationals holding ordinary passports
  • Scope: Passengers remaining in the international zone of French airports during a layover en route to a third country
  • Previous Exemption: Indians with visas from the US, Canada, Japan, or an EU member state were already exempt

This policy change is expected to simplify travel for Indian passengers connecting through French airports, reducing paperwork and costs associated with transit visa applications. It also aligns with similar measures adopted by other Schengen countries to foster closer ties with India.
