Yemen's Houthi group has issued a stark warning to the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, declaring its unwavering support for Iran, Palestine, and Lebanon amid escalating regional tensions. In a strongly worded statement, the Houthi Foreign Ministry endorsed Iran's recent restrictions in the strategic waterway, describing them as a legitimate act of self-defence and a necessary measure to counter security threats.
Houthis Accuse US of Piracy
The Houthis accused the United States of engaging in “piracy” in the Gulf of Oman, alleging that attacks on Iranian commercial vessels and the detention of their crews are illegal under international law. The group blamed Washington for causing global economic strain, claiming that these actions are driving up food and fuel prices while disrupting already fragile global supply chains.
Regional Solidarity
The statement emphasized that “Yemen is not neutral” and openly backed Iran, Palestine, and Lebanon. The Houthis framed their stance as a necessary response to what they perceive as US aggression in the region. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been a flashpoint in the broader Middle East conflict.
The Houthi position aligns with Iran's recent moves to restrict shipping in the Strait, which have drawn international concern. The group's endorsement signals a deepening alignment between the Houthis and Tehran, further complicating efforts to de-escalate tensions. The US has not yet officially responded to the Houthi accusations.
