Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has officially announced that Tuesday, June 16, will be the first day of Muharram 1448 AH, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The announcement followed the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon on Monday evening.
UAE Confirms Same Date
The United Arab Emirates has also confirmed Tuesday as the start of Muharram and the Islamic year 1448 AH. The UAE Fatwa Council stated that the decision was based on a review of scientific data related to the crescent moon sighting, in coordination with specialized scientific authorities and centers across the country.
Day of Ashura Expected on June 25
With the commencement of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, observed on the 10th day of the month, is expected to fall on Thursday, June 25.
The Hijri New Year marks the start of the Islamic lunar calendar, which determines important religious dates and observances throughout the year. This occasion commemorates the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina, a defining event in Islamic history and the starting point of the Islamic calendar.
In its statement, the Saudi Supreme Court also offered prayers for the continued success of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, as well as for unity and solidarity among Muslims worldwide.
