Fresh Western Disturbance to Boost Monsoon Advance in UP from June 18
Western Disturbance to Boost Monsoon in UP from June 18

A fresh western disturbance (WD) is set to influence weather conditions across northern India from June 18, potentially aiding the southwest monsoon's advance into Uttar Pradesh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the WD will be active in the coming days, originating over the Mediterranean region and moving eastwards through Pakistan into northern India. When these systems reach the western Himalayas, they often increase cloud cover, alter wind patterns, and create favorable conditions for rainfall.

Current Monsoon Status

As of Wednesday night, the northern limit of the monsoon passed through Harnai and Solapur in Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Koraput and Phulbani in Odisha, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Jamui and Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Met officials stated that conditions are favorable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into additional parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and some areas of Chhattisgarh over the next 4-5 days.

Impact of the Western Disturbance

Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Lucknow, explained that the monsoon's pace has slowed recently due to weakened moisture flow from the Arabian Sea and persistent hot, dry westerly winds over northwest India. The incoming WD is expected to disrupt this pattern by reducing the influence of dry winds and improving moisture availability across the region. “The system could also lead to the formation of a cyclonic circulation over parts of north India, helping pull moisture-laden winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the Indo-Gangetic plains. This is likely to create conditions that support further movement of the monsoon into UP,” he added.

Weather experts anticipate that the effects of the WD will become noticeable within the next two to three days, with increased cloudiness and possibilities of rainfall activity in several parts of the state.
