Strict Action Against Ragging at GMERS Medical College
In a significant crackdown on ragging activities, authorities at Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Medical College in Gandhinagar have suspended 14 MBBS students from their hostel accommodations following confirmed incidents of ragging against first-year medical students. The disciplinary action, announced on Monday, involves varying suspension periods ranging from six months to two years based on the severity of involvement.
Investigation Reveals Systematic Harassment
The college administration initiated an immediate investigation after receiving formal complaints from first-year MBBS students last week. According to the complaints, senior students from second and third year batches had allegedly subjected their juniors to mental harassment and psychological torture under the guise of introduction sessions within the hostel premises.
Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya personally announced the disciplinary measures, stating that seven third-year students received two-year hostel rustication while seven second-year students were suspended from hostel facilities for six months. The minister emphasized that the college authorities reviewed CCTV footage as part of their investigation, which clearly demonstrated antisocial and immoral behavior by the accused students.
Zero Tolerance Policy Against Ragging
Minister Pansheriya delivered a strong message to the student community, urging them to refrain from any form of harassment. When you are going to become a respected doctor, you should also have humanity in you, only then will you be able to serve truly, he remarked during his address. The health minister further warned that even minor complaints of ragging would trigger immediate action that could potentially damage students' academic careers.
The state government has made it clear that such incidents should not recur in any educational institutions across Gujarat. This strict action against ragging at GMERS Medical College serves as a warning to all medical colleges in the state about the serious consequences of violating anti-ragging regulations.
