Tech Entrepreneur and Congressional Candidate Advocates for Iranian Students Facing US Immigration Ban
Silicon Valley entrepreneur Ethan Agarwal, who is challenging incumbent Ro Khanna in the Democratic primary for California's 17th Congressional District, has publicly urged President Donald Trump to reconsider the current immigration ban on Iran. This policy pause threatens to displace thousands of Iranian students graduating from US universities in May 2024, as they will be unable to transition to Optional Practical Training (OPT), STEM OPT extensions, or H-1B visa programs without its lifting.
Immediate Impact on F-1 Visa Holders and the US Economy
These students, currently on F-1 visas, face a dire situation: if the pause remains, they must return to Iran within 60 days post-graduation. Agarwal emphasized in a statement, "These are young people who want to contribute to America; who are in school at places like Berkeley, Santa Clara University, and Stanford. Without lifting the pause, they will have to return to Iran in 60 days. We want these young, brilliant people staying and working in America, paying taxes in America and creating jobs here." He specifically requested an exemption for students graduating in 2026 to allow for smoother transitions.
In support, Agarwal shared a letter from Iranian students asserting no affiliation with the Islamic Republic and requesting fair security reviews. However, the ban precludes such processes, forcing their departure after college completion.
Controversy and Criticism Surrounding the Advocacy
Agarwal's stance has sparked debate. One critic argued, "I don't know who elected this moron to represent Iranians; many of the F-1 students at Stanford, Berkeley, and in Silicon Valley in CA-17 (Google, Apple, etc.) are agents or assets of the regime. Please keep exercising extreme caution and vetting." Another added, "Here we have yet another aspiring US politician who advocates for NOT US CITIZENS. He could be fighting for American students and workers, instead he is fighting against them."
In response, Agarwal maintained his position, advocating for rigorous screening of all students and deportation of those deemed harmful by the State Department, balancing security concerns with economic benefits.
