Social Media Sparks Controversy Over US Role in Drug Lord's Death
A controversial claim has emerged on social media, suggesting that the United States was directly involved in the elimination of one of Mexico's most powerful drug lords, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho. However, official sources have not confirmed any US participation in the operation.
Conservative Commentator Makes Bold Allegations
Conservative commentator Laura Loomer posted on X about the reported death of El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Loomer asserted that the cartel boss "was eliminated by the Trump administration this morning" and encouraged supporters to celebrate. She argued that the US was behind the mission and warned that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum could face danger if she was solely responsible.
"I think it's pretty obvious the US was involved. Everyone knows the Cartel runs Mexico. If the Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, ordered this, the cartel will likely have her killed," Loomer wrote. She added, "This was clearly a US-supported operation. She's probably in a safe house as I type this."
Official Confirmation Points to Mexican Army Operation
There is no official confirmation that the United States ordered or directly participated in the operation that killed El Mencho. Government sources indicate that the operation was carried out by the Mexican Army in the state of Jalisco, located in western Mexico. Reuters reported that El Mencho was killed during a military action, as federal forces targeted one of the country's most wanted cartel leaders.
Background on El Mencho and the CJNG
El Mencho had led the CJNG, a criminal organization implicated in trafficking large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other drugs. He was a top priority for both Mexican and US authorities, with the US offering a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.
Violent Backlash and Security Concerns
The death of the cartel leader triggered violent backlash in several states. Videos shared online depicted:
- Burning vehicles
- Road blockades
- Clashes between cartel members and security forces
The governor of Jalisco urged residents to stay indoors as unrest spread. In response, the US Embassy in Mexico City issued a travel alert, advising American citizens in Jalisco and other states to shelter in place and follow instructions from local authorities amid ongoing military and security operations.
Mexican Government's Statement
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and her government later confirmed that the operation was conducted by Mexican forces. They have not acknowledged any direct US military involvement on the ground, reinforcing the official narrative of a domestic-led effort.
