US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Walmart will significantly reduce prices on ground beef and other commodities, claiming the cuts were made at his administration's request to celebrate the United States' 250th independence anniversary. The retail giant confirmed price reductions across its stores and Sam's Club outlets, though some discounts are part of seasonal promotions typical for summer.
Specific price reductions and details
According to a press release from Walmart, the price for a one-pound package of 73% ground beef roll will decrease by approximately 12%, dropping to USD 5.94 from USD 6.74. The company also confirmed markdowns on soda and chip products from major brands such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. Sam's Club is introducing discounts on 250 individual items, including ribs, chicken wings, and beef hot dogs, as reported by CNN.
Trump took to Truth Social to express appreciation, stating, "Great news! I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration's request to celebrate our great Country's 250th birthday." He added that the ground beef price drop of almost 15% is "a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart."
Context of high beef prices and inflation
The discounts come at a time when record-high beef prices have strained American households. Data from the US Labour Department shows ground beef prices surged 12% in May compared to the previous year, making it one of the fastest-rising food categories. Elevated fuel costs following US and Israeli military actions against Iran in February have further pressured consumers.
To address market pressures, the US Department of Justice recently launched an inquiry into the four largest meatpacking companies, following Trump's demands to investigate potential collusion to keep beef prices artificially high. The administration also considered temporarily suspending tariffs on imported beef to boost supply and lower costs, but these proposals were put on hold after opposition from US cattle producers and congressional Republicans.
Trump criticizes predecessor and urges corporate action
During the announcement, Trump criticized former President Joe Biden, asserting that the previous administration caused escalating costs. Trump said his administration is lowering prices that Biden "incompetently" raised with what he described as "the worst inflation crisis in history." He also noted falling oil and gas prices, claiming credit for reducing egg and prescription drug costs by "historic levels." Trump urged other retailers to follow Walmart's lead, calling the company "absolute Patriots."
The pricing strategy marks a shift from Walmart's stance last year, when it warned that proposed tariffs under the Trump administration could raise consumer prices. Trump had pushed the company to absorb tariff costs rather than pass them to customers.
Walmart is widely seen as a key indicator of US consumer health. The chain has recently attracted more middle- and upper-income shoppers seeking discounts as inflation and high food costs persist.
