The Indian Global Capability Center (GCC) of Deutsche Bank is pioneering a startup-style approach to fast-track artificial intelligence adoption across its operations. This innovative strategy has yielded remarkable early results, with the in-house incubator at Deutsche India Pvt Ltd (DIPL) attracting an impressive 100 ideas within its inaugural 100 days of operation.
Unprecedented Workforce Openness to Technological Change
Stefan Schaffer, Managing Director and CEO of DIPL, highlighted the exceptional receptiveness of the Indian workforce to AI-led transformation. He noted that employees at the India-based GCC have demonstrated significantly less resistance compared to counterparts in many mature markets. Schaffer attributes this cultural advantage to India's broader association of change with progress, a mindset shaped by the nation's rapid digital adoption journey, including transformative platforms like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
"This adaptability is proving invaluable for a 150-year-old institution navigating structural shifts," Schaffer emphasized, underscoring how this cultural characteristic benefits Deutsche Bank's evolution.
Comprehensive AI Forward Programme Implementation
DIPL, which employs over 20,000 professionals across Pune, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Mumbai, is executing its AI strategy through the comprehensive "AI Forward" programme. This initiative strategically combines top-down investment with robust bottom-up participation, creating a holistic approach to technological transformation.
The programme's key components include:
- Startup-Modeled Incubator: Employees can pitch AI ideas directly to leadership and refine concepts with expert guidance
- Large-Scale Training: Already covering 20,000 employees on large language models and responsible AI usage
- Catalyst Initiative: Embedding specialists within teams to prototype solutions in live operational environments
Strategic Workforce Rebalancing and Ownership Shift
The AI push represents a crucial element of Deutsche Bank's broader technology operations reset. The institution has already achieved significant workforce restructuring, shifting from 30% internal staff to 70%, while simultaneously increasing the engineering share to 70%. Now, the bank is targeting deeper ownership from its Global Capability Centers through an innovative "70-50-30" framework.

- Locate 50% of portfolio owners within technology centers including India
- Position 30% of senior leadership roles within these centers
