Kerala UDF Govt Launches Free Bus Rides for Women

In a landmark move hailed as a victory for women's empowerment, the United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala has launched a free bus ride scheme for women across the state. The initiative, which came into effect on 15 June 2026, allows women to travel free of charge on 3,125 ordinary buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and other selected private operators.

Details of the Scheme

Under the scheme, women can avail free travel on ordinary, non-AC buses throughout Kerala. The government has allocated a budget of ₹100 crore annually to compensate bus operators for the loss of revenue. Women need to show any valid identity proof to avail the benefit, and no separate ticket or pass is required.

Reactions and Impact

Chief Minister V D Satheesan, who announced the scheme during the state budget presentation in March, said it would significantly reduce the financial burden on women and encourage their participation in the workforce. Opposition parties have welcomed the move but raised concerns about the implementation and potential overcrowding.

The scheme is expected to benefit millions of women daily, especially those from low-income households who rely on public transport for work, education, and other essential activities. Women's rights groups have lauded the government for taking a concrete step toward gender equality in mobility.

Implementation Challenges

Transport officials are working to ensure smooth implementation, including displaying stickers on buses and training conductors. The government has also set up a helpline for women to report any issues or denial of free travel. Regular monitoring and feedback mechanisms are being established to address any glitches.

With this initiative, Kerala joins a handful of Indian states that have introduced free bus travel for women, setting a precedent for other states to follow.
