Police Head Constable and Accomplice Booked for Bribery in Kolhapur
Kolhapur: A police head constable and an accomplice were booked at Bhudargad police station for seeking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a vehicle owner to release a car that had been impounded in connection with a crime.
The vehicle owner approached the Kolhapur Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) with a complaint that police head constable Subhash Ananda Chougale (39), posted at Bhudargad Police Station, had demanded Rs 1 lakh to release his car. The demand was made through an intermediary, Mustafa Dastgir Shaikh (41), a resident of Sai Colony, Gargoti in Bhudargad tehsil. The amount was later negotiated down to Rs 50,000.
The ACB laid a trap and arrested Shaikh, who confessed that he had accepted Rs 50,000 on behalf of Chougale. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the bribery racket.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of corruption within law enforcement agencies. The ACB has urged citizens to report any such demands promptly to help clean up the system.
