Amarnath Yatra Begins as Pilgrims Answer Baba Barfani's Call

The annual Amarnath Yatra commenced on July 3, 2026, as the first batches of pilgrims began their journey to the holy cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known as Baba Barfani. Authorities opened the two mountain tracks—the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route—at daybreak, allowing thousands of devotees to proceed.

Pilgrims Set Out Amid Security Arrangements

According to officials, the initial group of over 5,000 pilgrims left from the base camps in Jammu and Kashmir early in the morning. The yatra, which runs for about two months, is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the country. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers along the routes to ensure the safety of the pilgrims, with drones and sniffer dogs also being used for surveillance.

Traditional Routes Opened for Devotees

The Pahalgam route, spanning 48 kilometers, is the longer of the two and is traditionally favored by pilgrims who wish to experience a more arduous trek. The Baltal route, at 14 kilometers, is shorter but steeper. Both routes converge at the cave shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 meters. The yatra was formally flagged off by the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, who expressed confidence in the arrangements made by the administration.

Health and Weather Precautions

Medical camps have been set up at various points along the routes to provide assistance to pilgrims, especially those suffering from altitude sickness or other health issues. The weather forecast indicates clear skies for the next few days, but pilgrims have been advised to carry warm clothing and rain gear as conditions can change rapidly in the mountainous region. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has also issued guidelines for safe travel, including mandatory registration and health checks.

Significance of the Yatra

The Amarnath Yatra holds immense religious significance for Hindus, who believe that the ice stalagmite formed inside the cave is a natural manifestation of Lord Shiva. The pilgrimage is considered a sacred duty for many, and devotees often undertake it as a fulfillment of a vow or to seek blessings. The yatra was suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed in 2022 with restrictions.

As the first pilgrims began their ascent, chants of 'Bam Bam Bhole' echoed through the valleys, reflecting the deep faith and devotion that drives this annual journey. The administration has urged all pilgrims to cooperate with security personnel and follow the rules to ensure a smooth and safe yatra.
