Mother-Daughter Arrested for Gold Theft in Chennai

Chennai: The Koyambedu police have arrested a woman and her daughter for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and a silver coin from a residence in Nerkundram. The incident came to light when the complainant, Maheshwari, a 50-year-old resident of Meenakshi Nagar, returned from a vacation to find her valuables missing.

Details of the Theft

Maheshwari informed the police that she and her children had left for a vacation on April 30. Upon their return on May 8, she discovered that gold jewellery kept inside a bureau was missing. The stolen items included diamond earrings, gold bangles, a gold chain, a ring, and a 10-gram silver coin. The total weight of the stolen gold was 30.43 grams.

Investigation and Arrest

During the investigation, the police identified the suspects as Sathya, 38, from Villivakkam, and her daughter Hemalatha, 21, from Anna Nagar. According to the authorities, the duo had visited Maheshwari's house on April 30 to meet Maheshwari's father and seized the opportunity to steal the jewellery. The police have recovered the stolen items from the accused.

The arrested individuals have been produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigations are underway to determine if they were involved in similar offences in the past.
