Former Costa Rican vice president Rebeca Grynspan argued that defending the United Nations today requires the courage to change it, while former Senegal president Macky Sall called for rigorous management and better coordination across UN agencies. Other candidates include former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet, who focused on women's rights, and Argentina's Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog, who noted that reform efforts are merely a starting point. Grynspan and Bachelet aim to become the first woman to lead the UN, with tradition suggesting the role could go to a Latin American candidate.

UK-France Border Security Deal Aims to Curb Channel Crossings

Britain has agreed to pay France up to £660 million over three years under a new border security deal designed to reduce illegal migrant crossings across the English Channel. This funding includes a performance-based component, with part of the money dependent on achieving targeted results. Official data indicates that around 41,000 people attempted the journey to England in small boats in 2025, nearing record levels seen in 2022.

The agreement allocates approximately £500 million for enhanced enforcement along northern France's coast, involving nearly 1,100 law enforcement, intelligence, and military personnel. An additional £160 million will be released only if the measures prove effective, with funding potentially halted after one year if targets are not met. This deal replaces a previous £480 million arrangement from 2023 and introduces expanded surveillance, including drones, helicopters, upgraded camera systems, and increased maritime patrols. The British government reported that joint efforts have prevented over 42,000 attempted crossings since July 2024.
