Tirunelveli: Two elderly individuals lost their lives, and six others, including five school students, sustained injuries after a car collided with an auto rickshaw on the national highway near the Nanguneri toll plaza in Tirunelveli district on Friday evening.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the auto rickshaw was transporting students from a private school in Nanguneri to Tirunelveli. As it approached the toll plaza, a car traveling from Nagercoil struck the auto from behind. The impact caused the car driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle overturning.
Casualties and Injuries
Radha, 72, a resident of Nagercoil, died on the spot. Another victim, Natarajan, 70, also from Nagercoil, sustained severe injuries and succumbed while being transported to a hospital. The car driver, identified as Rajamohan, suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital. Five school students in the auto rickshaw sustained minor injuries. Police confirmed that Rajamohan and the students are in stable condition.
Aftermath and Investigation
The bodies of the deceased were sent to the hospital for autopsy. Traffic on the busy highway was briefly disrupted until the car was removed from the accident site. The Nanguneri police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the matter.
