Greer Arrives in Delhi for Trade Talks
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer arrived at Vanijay Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday to meet with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The discussions are centered on an interim trade deal and the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Greer was accompanied by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and a US trade delegation.
Optimism Ahead of Meetings
On Tuesday, Gor expressed optimism ahead of Greer's two-day visit to India. In a post on X, the US envoy signaled his anticipation, stating he looked forward to welcoming Greer to the capital for scheduled meetings with Minister Piyush Goyal and other senior officials.
Greer's visit follows a warm meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France.
Focus on Interim Agreement and BTA
The high-level discussions will focus on the United States-India Joint Statement and an Interim Agreement, which are part of broader bilateral trade negotiations. According to a USTR press release, these negotiations were originally launched by President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025.
India remains engaged with the United States on proposed tariff measures under Section 301 proceedings and is simultaneously working towards finalizing a bilateral trade framework agreement with Washington.
Progress on Interim Trade Pact
Last week, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the interim bilateral trade pact had reached its final stages. Speaking at a briefing after the G7 summit, Misri highlighted that both nations had made significant progress and emphasized the importance of Ambassador Greer's impending visit to New Delhi to drive trade deliberations forward.
"With the United States, we have made significant progress already on the conclusion of an interim free trade bilateral trade agreement," Misri said. "We are in the final stages of concluding that agreement."
Greer's Itinerary After India
Following his meetings in India, Ambassador Greer will travel to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to meet with President Mirziyoyev, Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva, and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev.
The USTR stated that Ambassador Greer will conduct each of these international meetings with his counterparts to discuss achieving fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade with the United States.
