Air India Cuts Fuel Surcharge on US, Europe, UK Flights

Air India has reduced fuel surcharges for flights to North America, Australia, Europe, and the United Kingdom, effective July 1, 2026, as global oil prices have eased in recent weeks, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Revised Surcharge Details

The fuel surcharge for flights to North America and Australia has been cut to USD 200 per ticket, down from USD 280. For services to Europe and the UK, the surcharge has been reduced to USD 125 from USD 205. The revised rates apply to tickets issued from July 1 onward.

Fuel surcharges for other international routes and domestic flights remain unchanged. The airline had initially introduced these surcharges on April 7, 2026, amid a sharp increase in oil and jet fuel prices driven by the West Asia conflict.

Background on Surcharge Implementation

On April 7, the Air India Group—comprising Air India and Air India Express—announced a range of fuel surcharges. For international flights (excluding certain routes), surcharges varied from USD 24 to USD 280. For domestic flights, surcharges ranged from Rs 299 to Rs 899, transitioning from a flat fee to a distance-based grid following the government's decision to cap domestic Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price hikes at 25%.

According to the airline's April 7 statement, the global average jet fuel price had surged to USD 195.19 per barrel for the week ending March 27, 2026, up from USD 99.40 at the end of February—a rise of nearly 100%. ATF typically accounts for 40–45% of an airline's total operating cost.

Impact of Geopolitical Tensions

The West Asia conflict had not only driven up fuel costs but also imposed airspace restrictions, further inflating operational expenses for carriers like Air India. The easing of oil prices in recent weeks has allowed the airline to pass on some relief to passengers on key long-haul routes.

Sources confirmed the surcharge reductions on Thursday, though Air India declined to comment officially.

Market Context

The move aligns with broader industry trends as jet fuel prices have moderated from their peaks. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had earlier flagged the steep rise in fuel costs, which pressured airline margins globally. By lowering surcharges, Air India aims to remain competitive on high-demand routes to North America, Europe, and Australia.

No changes have been made to surcharges on other international sectors or domestic flights, the sources added.
