A special CBI court on Friday remanded a director of the Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) and a businessman to judicial custody in connection with the Rs 75 crore Crest scam. The accused were produced before the court after the end of their three-day police custody.
Case Details
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested the HPGCL director and the businessman earlier this week for their alleged involvement in irregularities in awarding contracts for Crest Projects. The scam involves a total of Rs 75 crore, with allegations of corruption and criminal conspiracy.
Allegations
According to the CBI, the accused colluded to manipulate the tendering process, causing undue losses to the state exchequer. The director, who was responsible for overseeing power projects, is accused of favoring the businessman in exchange for bribes. The businessman, in turn, allegedly secured contracts worth crores through fraudulent means.
Investigation
The CBI had conducted raids at multiple locations, including the offices and residences of the accused, recovering incriminating documents and digital evidence. The investigation revealed a network of shell companies used to launder the proceeds of the scam. Further interrogation of the accused is expected to uncover more details about the conspiracy.
Legal Proceedings
The court, after hearing arguments from both sides, remanded the accused to judicial custody until November 10. The CBI opposed the bail plea, citing the gravity of the offense and the possibility of tampering with evidence. The defense counsel argued that the accusations were baseless and that their clients were being framed.
The case is part of a broader crackdown on corruption in public sector undertakings in Haryana. The state government has vowed to take strict action against those involved in financial irregularities.
