Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has hinted at a potential merger of schools with poor student enrolment across the state. Speaking on the issue, he highlighted instances where teachers were found reporting non-existent admissions to continue receiving salaries.
Concerns Over Fake Admissions
Shivakumar stated, “We have come across instances of teachers reporting non-existent admissions to continue getting salaries.” This practice has led to inflated enrolment figures, masking the actual decline in student numbers in many government schools.
Proposed Merger Strategy
The CM suggested that merging schools with low enrolment could be a viable solution to optimize resources and ensure quality education. He emphasized that such a move would help in better allocation of teachers and infrastructure.
The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to improve the state's education system. Officials are expected to conduct a detailed survey to identify schools with critically low enrolment before any merger decision is finalized.
This development has sparked debate among education stakeholders, with some welcoming the move to curb wastage of resources, while others express concerns over potential disruption to students' education.
