IndiGo, India's largest airline, has introduced a new entry-level fare category called 'IndiGo Lite' that allows passengers to travel with only cabin baggage on direct domestic and international flights. The move, announced on Wednesday, aims to cater to travelers who prefer to travel light and seek lower base fares.
Key Features of IndiGo Lite
Under the 'IndiGo Lite' fare, economy class passengers will enjoy a lower base price with an auto-assigned seat at no additional cost. The cabin baggage allowance is limited to 7 kilograms. The airline, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, stated in a release that this fare will be the lowest among all options offered under various categories.
Strategic Move for Affordability
IndiGo's Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh said, Designed for customers who travel light and would like to pay only for the services they need, IndiGo Lite is another step towards building a strong, fit-for-purpose product portfolio. This reflects our agility in responding to the market dynamics while reinforcing our commitment to making travel more accessible and affordable for our customers.
Competitive Landscape
Air India Express already offers cabin baggage-only fares, indicating a growing trend among Indian carriers to unbundle services and offer more flexible pricing. IndiGo operates over 2,100 flights daily, serving numerous domestic and international destinations.
Impact on Passengers
With 'IndiGo Lite', passengers who do not require checked baggage can save on ticket costs. The fare is available for direct flights, meaning passengers on connecting itineraries may need to opt for standard fares that include checked baggage. This new option is expected to appeal to budget-conscious travelers and those on short trips.
