Punjab Chief Minister Launches Major Financial Aid Scheme for Women
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday launched the 'Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojana', a flagship scheme providing monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 to women aged 18 to 59 years. The scheme is expected to benefit over 1.5 crore women across the state, marking one of the largest direct benefit transfer initiatives for women in Punjab.
Key Features of the Scheme
Under the scheme, eligible women will receive Rs 1,000 per month, while those from scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other backward classes will get Rs 1,500 per month. The assistance will be directly transferred to the beneficiaries' bank accounts. The scheme aims to provide financial independence and support to women, especially from economically weaker sections.
Chief Minister Mann said, "This scheme is a tribute to the mothers and sisters of Punjab. Our government is committed to empowering women and ensuring their dignity. This financial aid will help them meet their daily needs and contribute to their families' well-being." He added that the scheme would be implemented transparently and efficiently to ensure no eligible woman is left out.
Implementation and Eligibility
Women aged 18 to 59 years, who are residents of Punjab and not income tax payers, are eligible for the scheme. The government has set up a dedicated portal for registration, and beneficiaries can apply online or through common service centers. The scheme will be funded through the state budget, with an estimated annual outlay of Rs 18,000 crore.
To ensure seamless delivery, the government has linked the scheme with the Aadhaar-based payment system. Beneficiaries will receive the first installment in August 2026. The scheme also includes a provision for grievance redressal through a dedicated helpline and district-level committees.
Political and Social Impact
The launch of the scheme is seen as a major political move ahead of the upcoming state elections. Mann said, "We are fulfilling our promise to the women of Punjab. This scheme is not just about money; it is about respect and recognition." The opposition has criticized the scheme as a populist measure, but the government maintains it is a well-planned initiative to uplift women.
Women's rights groups have welcomed the scheme, calling it a step towards financial inclusion. According to a government statement, over 10 lakh women have already registered in the first week. The scheme is expected to significantly reduce financial dependency and improve the standard of living for millions of families.
