LPG Crisis in India Fuels Rapid PNG Adoption in Delhi-NCR

Concerns over LPG shortages, linked to supply disruptions amid escalating US-Iran tensions, have triggered a significant shift towards piped natural gas (PNG) in the Delhi-NCR region. This energy transition is marked by a surge in digital engagement and installation activities, as consumers seek reliable alternatives for cooking gas.

Digital Surge and Household Connections

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has reported a remarkable increase in activity on its IGL Connect platform. In the first 15 days of March, the app witnessed over 22,000 new registrations, representing a 14% rise compared to February. This digital growth is complemented by a substantial expansion in physical connections, with IGL commencing gas supply to more than 15,000 new households during the same period.

The company has effectively doubled its daily installation capacity, scaling up from an average of 600–700 connections earlier this year to between 1,300 and 1,500 connections per day. "This rapid scaling up of operations is a direct response to the growing demand driven by LPG supply concerns," stated an IGL spokesperson.

Commercial Interest and User Base Expansion

Beyond residential demand, commercial establishments have shown heightened interest in PNG. Weekly inquiries from businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and small industries have surged from about 20 per week to nearly 140 per week, indicating a broader shift towards PNG as an alternative fuel source.

The IGL Connect app now boasts nearly 8.5 lakh active users, with total registrations crossing 13 lakh. This expanding user base reflects increased adoption among consumers looking for uninterrupted access to cooking gas. The app facilitates new registrations, account management, connection requests, and gas delivery tracking, underscoring a move towards tech-enabled consumer interactions.

Government Guidelines and Incentives

At the policy level, the government is actively promoting PNG adoption. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued guidelines stating that households with PNG connections will no longer be allowed to obtain new LPG connections or keep additional ones. Inactive PNG users are urged to start availing the service.

India currently has approximately 1.6 crore PNG connections, of which over 1 crore are actively using natural gas. Authorities have directed city gas distribution entities to accelerate the conversion of remaining consumers in areas where PNG infrastructure is already in place.

To further incentivize the transition, IGL has introduced offers such as a Rs 500 discount on bills for users switching to PNG before March 31. The company has also strengthened its workforce and operations to handle the increased volume of requests without significant delays.

Strategic Focus and Future Outlook

IGL's efforts highlight a strategic focus on both residential and commercial segments to meet growing energy demands. The scaling up of installation capacity ensures that new consumers can be accommodated quickly, maintaining continuity of supply amid the LPG crisis.

This shift towards PNG, driven by geopolitical tensions and government initiatives, underscores a broader trend in India's energy landscape as consumers and businesses seek more stable and efficient fuel options.
