Mumbai Fuel Panic Buying Eases as Officials Confirm No Shortage
Motorists in Mumbai formed extensive queues at numerous petrol pumps starting late Monday evening, rushing to fill their two-wheeler and four-wheeler tanks amid widespread fears of an impending fuel shortage. This surge in demand triggered significant panic buying and raised considerable concern among daily commuters across the city.
Official Reassurance on Fuel Availability
However, petrol dealers and authoritative official sources have categorically stated that there is absolutely no shortage of petrol, diesel, or CNG in Mumbai. They have urgently appealed to citizens to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic purchasing.
Chetan Modi, president of the Petrol Dealers Association, explained to media outlets that the sudden rush was caused by temporary payment-related logistical issues at a limited number of pumps and not by any actual disruption in fuel availability. "There is no shortage of petrol or diesel or CNG in the city. We have adequate stocks and pumps will not dry out," Modi emphasized.
Root Cause: Payment Delays After Holidays
Modi detailed that dealers are required to make advance payments to oil marketing companies to purchase their fuel stocks. Due to two consecutive holidays followed by a Sunday last week, some dealers could not deposit their payments on schedule. Consequently, a few pumps could not maintain their usual reserve stocks and had reduced fuel quantities available on Monday.
"It's just that we have to pay advance money for purchasing stocks from oil marketing companies. There were two holidays and Sunday last week. Money could not be deposited on time for a few pumps and therefore they could not keep reserve stocks. A few of them had less fuel on Monday. The burden was on other pumps, which witnessed long queues," Modi clarified.
Situation Expected to Normalize Quickly
He assured the public that the situation is anticipated to ease rapidly. "The problem will normalize by Tuesday evening. There is nothing to worry about," he stated confidently.
A senior source within the petroleum ministry in Delhi also dismissed concerns over any broader fuel crisis in Maharashtra, confirming that no shortage exists and that ample stocks are readily available across the state.
Dealers Appeal Against Panic Buying
Dealers have attributed the extensive queues largely to panic buying driven by unfounded rumors. They have made a strong appeal to the public not to indulge in such behavior, stressing emphatically that fuel supplies throughout Mumbai remain completely stable and uninterrupted.
The collective message from authorities is clear: while temporary logistical hiccups occurred, the city's fuel infrastructure is robust and capable of meeting all demand without issue.
