UPPCL Smart Prepaid Meters Switched to Postpaid: Key Changes
UPPCL Smart Prepaid Meters Switched to Postpaid: Key Changes

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has converted all smart prepaid meters to postpaid mode effective May 6, 2026. The change, ordered by the Managing Director, affects approximately 83 lakh prepaid meters out of 85 lakh smart meters installed across the state, as per UPPCL data. Energy Minister A K Sharma confirmed on May 8, 2026, that the transition follows Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's directives.

What Changed and What Remains the Same

Only the billing mode has changed. The smart meter hardware continues to record actual consumption in real time, eliminating estimated readings. Each unit on the postpaid bill corresponds to a transmitted reading, not an average. Consumers now consume electricity across the billing cycle and pay once a month instead of topping up in advance. UPPCL bills for May 2026 consumption are issued in June, with a monthly cycle running from July onward, per the official order.

New Billing Terms and Late Payment Rules

Energy Minister A K Sharma's statement outlined the following terms for postpaid consumers: missing the 15-day payment window does not trigger immediate disconnection but starts the late payment surcharge clock and a 7-day notice period. Paying on or before the due date avoids both surcharge and notice.

Security Deposits and Pending Dues

Security deposits adjusted during the prepaid mode are being reimposed under the Electricity Supply Code-2005 and Cost Data Book-2026. Recovery begins from bills generated in July 2026. Pending electricity dues up to April 30, 2026, can be cleared in installments based on consumer category. Both deposit and pending dues appear as separate line items on the monthly bill alongside consumption charges.

Checking Bills and Raising Complaints

Before paying, a UPPCL bill check confirms the exact amount due, billing period, units consumed, and any deposit installment. The amount shown on a certified bill check platform is pulled directly from the discom's live billing system. For billing irregularities during the prepaid period, special grievance redressal camps run at Executive Engineer and Sub-Divisional Officer offices from May 15 to June 30, 2026. The 1912 helpline handles smart meter complaints. Consumers should bring their consumer number and previous prepaid recharge receipts. To verify past payments or complaints, check the UPPCL electricity bill status on a BBPS platform for real-time account position.

Paying the UPPCL Bill on Bajaj Finance

The bill arrives by the 10th of each month with a 15-day payment window. Bajaj Finance processes UPPCL bill payments across PVVNL, MVVNL, DVVNL, PUVVNL, and KESCO Kanpur through BBPS.
