Air India has been ranked the fourth most punctual airline globally and in the Asia-Pacific region for June 2026, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. The carrier recorded an on-time arrival rate of 86.85% across 15,135 tracked flights during the month, alongside an on-time departure rate of 86.23% and a completion factor of 99.7%.
Operational Improvements Drive Ranking
The airline official said the ranking reflected sustained efforts to improve operational reliability through better network planning, enhanced monitoring and faster decision-making across its domestic and international operations. Operating a hub-and-spoke network through congested airports at Delhi and Mumbai, Air India noted that its schedule is often affected by air traffic control restrictions and airport congestion, which can have a ripple effect across the network.
To improve schedule adherence, the airline has introduced measures such as reducing aircraft turnaround time, strengthening real-time operational monitoring and improving departure punctuality. It has also enhanced contingency planning and coordination across teams to minimise disruptions caused by adverse weather, airspace restrictions, technical issues and airport congestion.
Fleet Modernisation and Network Expansion
The operational gains come alongside Air India's wider transformation plan, which includes fleet renewal, customer experience improvements, digital initiatives and expansion of its global network. As part of its fleet modernisation programme, the airline has placed orders for 600 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. It has inducted three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners over the past six months, while more Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft are scheduled for delivery later this year.
"Air India is also refurbishing its legacy widebody fleet. Two of its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft with upgraded cabins have returned to service, while three more are undergoing retrofitting in the United States," said the official. The airline expects more than half of its widebody fleet to have new or upgraded interiors by the end of 2026, as it seeks to strengthen its long-haul operations and improve passenger experience.
