Government Reassures Citizens on Fuel Availability Amid Global Tensions
Amid escalating geopolitical tensions that are straining global oil supplies, the Indian government has affirmed its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability across the nation. Authorities are closely monitoring maritime safety in the Middle East to safeguard energy imports.
No Disruption in Household LPG Supply
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has moved to reassure citizens, stating that there has been no disruption in household LPG supply. Domestic LPG cylinder deliveries remain normal, with more than 53.5 lakh cylinders delivered in a single day against bookings.
The ministry has urged people not to rush to fuel stations or stock up on supplies unnecessarily. Citizens are advised to avoid panic purchases of petrol, diesel, and LPG, as the government is making all efforts to ensure their availability.
Essential Services Fully Supported
Essential services continue to receive full support, with 100% supply being maintained for Domestic LPG, Domestic PNG, and CNG for transport. Supply management measures are being implemented as needed to address any potential challenges.
Shifts in Consumer Energy Behavior
Simultaneously, the government has highlighted notable changes in consumer behavior within the energy sector. More than 39,000 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections via the MYPNGD.in portal, indicating a gradual shift towards piped natural gas.
Additionally, there has been a significant rise in auto fuel demand. The average Auto LPG sale by Public Sector Undertaking Oil Marketing Companies in April 2026 (until April 17) is approximately 305 metric tons per day, compared to an average of 177 metric tons per day in February 2026.
Maritime Safety and Indian Shipping
On the maritime front, authorities have confirmed that Indian shipping continues to move safely through the region despite inherent risks. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported that the Indian-flagged crude oil tanker Desh Garima safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz on April 18, 2026.
The vessel, carrying 31 Indian seafarers, is expected to arrive at Mumbai on April 22, 2026. However, the ministry acknowledged recent security incidents, noting that two Indian vessels reported a firing incident while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, though no injuries to any crew were reported.
The situation is being closely tracked, with all Indian seafarers confirmed safe and continuous monitoring in place.
Strong Refinery Operations and Stock Levels
Regarding fuel availability, the petroleum ministry emphasized that refineries are operating at strong capacity. Sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel are being maintained, and retail fuel stations are functioning normally across the country.
Government Measures to Protect Consumers
To cushion consumers from global price shocks, the government has implemented fiscal measures. The Middle East crisis has led to an abnormal increase in crude prices; however, to protect consumers, the Government of India has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 per litre.
Furthermore, the government has intensified action against malpractice in the supply chain. On April 18, more than 2,400 raids were conducted across the country to check hoarding and black marketing of LPG.
Coordinated Efforts for Energy Security
Officials stated that coordinated efforts with states, industry stakeholders, and agencies are ongoing to ensure energy security and uninterrupted supplies despite global uncertainty. These measures aim to maintain stability and reliability in India's energy infrastructure.
