India to Prioritise Capex Despite Fiscal Stress

NEW DELHI: While acknowledging possible stress due to the West Asia conflict, expenditure secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam on Friday said that the Centre will prioritise capital expenditure and seek to ensure that the entire allocation for public spending is utilised.

“The fiscal stress is indeed very much a reality, but at the same time... the capex will really be a priority item, which we would like to preserve and ensure that it continues at the budgeted level,” Vualnam said at a conference organised by the Isaac Centre for Public Policy at Ashoka University.

Highways, railways, shipping, ports, and urban development were flagged as the focus areas for capex during the current fiscal year. The government has budgeted for Rs 12.2 lakh crore capex this year.
