DRI busts gold smuggling syndicate in Delhi
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a cross-border gold smuggling network operating from Delhi, seizing 15 kilograms of foreign-origin gold valued at approximately Rs 21.4 crore. Four individuals, including the alleged mastermind, have been arrested in connection with the operation.
The operation was initiated after DRI officers intercepted an international courier consignment originating from Thailand at the Delhi Courier Terminal. Upon inspection, officers discovered eight disc-shaped pieces of foreign-origin gold, each weighing 1.5 kilograms, cleverly concealed inside gear parts. The consignment contained a total of 12 kilograms of smuggled gold.
Simultaneous searches lead to additional seizures
Following the initial interception, DRI officials conducted simultaneous searches at the residences of the intended recipient and the suspected mastermind. During these searches, they recovered two more disc-shaped gold pieces, each weighing 1.5 kilograms. This brought the total seizure to 15 kilograms of smuggled gold.
The agency has arrested four people, including the mastermind of the syndicate. The arrests were made after thorough investigation and surveillance. The DRI is continuing its probe to uncover the full extent of the smuggling network and identify other individuals involved.
Impact on gold smuggling operations
This seizure is a significant blow to illegal gold trade in the region. According to DRI officials, the syndicate was involved in cross-border smuggling, leveraging courier services to evade detection. The use of gear parts for concealment highlights the sophisticated methods employed by smugglers. The arrested individuals are expected to face charges under the Customs Act and other relevant laws.
