The Carnegie Corporation of New York has named four Indian Americans to its annual Great Immigrants list for 2026, honoring their significant contributions to American society. The list, released on July 1, 2026, includes 35 naturalized citizens from 22 countries, recognized as part of the foundation's Fourth of July Great Immigrants, Great Americans campaign.
Indian American Honorees
The four Indian Americans on the list are Dr. Vivek Murthy, the former U.S. Surgeon General; Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet; Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo; and Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist. Each was selected for their leadership in their respective fields and their commitment to public service.
Recognition of Immigrant Contributions
According to the Carnegie Corporation, the Great Immigrants initiative celebrates the vital role immigrants play in strengthening the United States. The 2026 honorees include leaders in business, science, arts, and public service. The foundation noted that immigrants continue to drive innovation and enrich the nation's cultural fabric.
"These remarkable individuals exemplify the best of what immigrants bring to America," said Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation, in a statement. "Their achievements remind us that our diversity is our greatest strength."
Impact and Legacy
The Great Immigrants list has recognized over 600 individuals since its inception in 2006. The 2026 cohort includes 15 women and 20 men, with backgrounds ranging from technology to healthcare. The honorees will be featured in a national advertising campaign and a digital tribute, highlighting their stories to inspire future generations.
The inclusion of four Indian Americans underscores the growing influence of the Indian diaspora in the United States, which now numbers over 4 million people. The list also includes immigrants from countries such as China, Mexico, and Nigeria, reflecting the global nature of American immigration.
