The Ram Temple in Ayodhya experienced its highest number of donation thefts between 2010 and 2020, with over ₹2 crore stolen from donation boxes during that period, according to temple sources. The revelations come amid ongoing efforts to enhance security at the temple, which has seen a surge in donations following its inauguration in January 2024.
Breakdown of Thefts Over the Years
Temple records indicate that thefts were sporadic before 2010, but incidents escalated sharply in the following decade. In 2011 alone, approximately ₹15 lakh was stolen, while 2015 saw a loss of ₹12 lakh. The largest single theft occurred in 2018, when ₹18 lakh was taken from a donation box. Overall, the 10-year period accounted for 70% of all reported donation thefts since the temple's reconstruction began.
Security Measures Implemented
In response to the thefts, the temple trust has installed CCTV cameras, increased security personnel, and introduced digital donation counters. "We have taken steps to ensure the safety of devotees' offerings. The number of thefts has reduced significantly since 2021," said a temple official.
Impact on Devotee Trust
Despite the thefts, donations have continued to pour in. In 2023, the temple received over ₹100 crore in donations, a record high. Devotees expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for stricter action. "It is sad that such incidents happen in a holy place. The authorities must ensure that every rupee is used for the temple's development," said Ram Singh, a devotee from Lucknow.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have registered multiple cases but arrests remain low. "We are reviewing old cases and using forensic evidence to identify suspects," said a senior police officer. The temple trust has also launched a helpline for anonymous tips.
