Lime Prices Skyrocket in Ahmedabad, Making Nimbu Pani a Costly Summer Treat

In Ahmedabad, preparing a simple glass of chilled nimbu pani to beat the summer heat has become an unexpectedly expensive affair. The citrus fruit, a summer staple, is now carrying a hefty price tag that is putting significant pressure on household budgets across the city.

Retail and Wholesale Prices Create a Squeeze

Current retail prices for limes in western areas of Ahmedabad and on quick commerce platforms are ranging from a staggering Rs 240 to Rs 300 per kilogram. Wholesale markets are not much better, with prices fluctuating between Rs 120 and Rs 200 per kg. This sharp increase is causing residents to sweat not just from the searing summer heat, which is consistently rising above 40 degrees Celsius, but also from the financial strain.

Local vegetable vendors and wholesalers attribute the price surge to a classic case of high demand meeting critically low supply. Market sources further explain that the size of the limes plays a decisive role in their pricing:

  • Small Limes: Approximately 40 pieces per kilogram, selling for Rs 120 to Rs 140.
  • Mid-Quality Limes: Priced similarly to small ones.
  • Large Limes: Around 20 pieces per kilogram, commanding prices as high as Rs 200.

Supply Chain Disruptions and Heatwave Impact

Chirag Prajapati, a prominent wholesaler and chairman of the new Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) on the city's outskirts, provided crucial insights into the supply crisis. "Gujarat is heavily dependent on south India for a major share of its lime supply," Prajapati stated. "Currently, Ahmedabad is receiving only about 60 tonnes of limes every day, which falls drastically short of the daily requirement of 100 to 150 tonnes. Interestingly, 60 tonnes of this supply are sourced from within Gujarat itself."

The shortage is acutely felt in local markets. A trader operating in the bustling Jamalpur market reported that his procurement has been slashed to just 50% of his usual quantity. According to this trader, intense and prolonged heatwaves in major lime-producing states—Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka—have severely squeezed output, leading to the current widespread shortage.

Local Vendors Feel the Pinch

The ripple effects are evident at the neighborhood level. Raju Prajapati, who runs a shop in the Bopal area, shared his experience. "I used to get about 20kg of limes from the APMC. Now, I'm only able to source 10kg because the overall demand has plummeted due to high prices. Consequently, I am selling them for Rs 280 per kg," he explained. In Bopal, prices are even steeper, ranging from Rs 280 to a shocking Rs 360 per kilogram, making the humble lime a near-luxury item for many families.

This price inflation transforms a basic summer refreshment into a significant budgetary consideration, highlighting how regional climate events and supply chain vulnerabilities can directly impact daily life and consumer costs in urban centers like Ahmedabad.
