Parliamentary Panel Hears Views on Self-Reliant Power Sector

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy convened on Friday to hear insights from officials of the Ministry of Power and the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) regarding the development of a self-reliant power sector. The meeting centered on the role of statutory bodies, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and institutions in achieving energy independence.

Key Discussions and Objectives

Jagdambika Pal, the acting Chairman of the committee, stated that the session was highly productive. He highlighted that NTPC and its subsidiary, NEEPCO, have been tasked with ensuring uninterrupted 24x7 electricity supply across the northeastern region. The committee engaged in detailed discussions on power generation, financial performance, and issues related to renewable energy and gas-based plants.

Focus on Atmanirbhar Power Sector

The primary agenda of the meeting was titled 'Role of Power Sector Statutory Bodies, PSUs and Institutions in development of Atmanirbhar Power Sector.' Pal emphasized the government's strong commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership to bolster the power sector's self-reliance.

Progress in Renewable Energy

Regarding India's clean energy targets, Pal noted that the country is making rapid progress in expanding non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity. He affirmed that India remains on track to achieve its renewable energy and net-zero emission goals, demonstrating a steadfast dedication to sustainable development.

Committee Chairman Shrirang Appa Chandu Barne was unable to attend the meeting due to flight cancellations caused by adverse weather conditions.
