As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 this Sunday, the mood among the people of Rajasthan remains notably subdued. Despite the muted anticipation, residents across the state have articulated clear priorities, with employment generation and relief from escalating living costs emerging as the foremost demands.
Youth Aspirations: Bridging the Education-Employment Gap
For Rajasthan's youth, who are grappling with limited opportunities and intensifying competition, the upcoming Budget is viewed as a crucial platform for the government to outline its vision to tackle these pressing concerns. The state's young population is looking for concrete measures that can translate their educational qualifications into sustainable livelihoods.
Rohan Jangid, a floor manager at a sanitaryware showroom in Jaipur, emphasized the potential of labor-intensive sectors. "If labor-intensive sectors such as MSMEs, manufacturing, construction, tourism, and services receive a boost and grow, they have the capacity to create lakhs of jobs for unskilled and semi-skilled youths across Rajasthan," he stated, highlighting the need for targeted economic stimuli.
Educated youths without substantial experience or proven skills are particularly vocal about the necessity for enhanced support mechanisms. They argue that increased backing for start-ups, comprehensive skill development programs, and apprenticeship-linked incentives are essential to bridge the persistent gap between academic learning and practical employment.
Rajaram Prajapat, a recent graduate who is still searching for a job, expressed a common sentiment. "We hope this sector gets adequate attention from the government in the Budget. Without proper initiatives, many like me will continue to face uncertainty and underemployment," he remarked, underscoring the urgency for policy interventions.
Common Citizens: Struggling with Rising Household Expenses
Beyond youth employment, the sharp rise in household expenses has become a significant concern for the common man and woman in Rajasthan. Citizens across various economic strata are expecting the Budget to provide much-needed relief through strategic measures aimed at stabilizing essential costs.
The expectation is for rationalization of fuel and food prices, along with subsidies on essential commodities, to alleviate the financial strain on households. A taxi driver from Jaipur, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out the precarious financial situation faced by many families.
"Families below the lower middle-class economic strata, and those residing in semi-urban and rural areas, are finding that their income growth is not keeping pace with the rise in expenses. Either income should rise significantly, or prices should remain stable. Otherwise, these households will be left with no resources for a rainy day," he explained, referring to the tight budgets of sweepers, helpers, watchmen, and others in similar job roles.
