CBDT Warns: Ignore Fake Advance Tax Emails on 'Significant Transactions'

Income Tax Department Issues Urgent Alert on Fraudulent Advance Tax Emails

The Income Tax Department has issued a critical warning to all taxpayers across India regarding deceptive email communications. On Saturday, authorities urged citizens to completely ignore any emails they may have received that alert them about so-called 'significant transactions' as part of the ongoing Advance Tax e-campaign.

CBDT Clarifies Email Communications Are Inaccurate

In an official post on social media platform X, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) revealed that certain taxpayers have been targeted with emails containing completely inaccurate details regarding 'significant transactions' undertaken by them. These communications are specifically related to the ongoing Advance Tax e-Campaign for Assessment Year 2026-27, which corresponds to the financial year 2025-26.

The CBDT stated clearly: "We are actively working to resolve this matter in coordination with our service provider. In the meantime, taxpayers are requested to kindly ignore the earlier email communication related to the Advance Tax e-Campaign for AY 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26)."

Important Deadline for Advance Tax Payments

This warning comes at a crucial time for taxpayers, as March 15 marks the final date for payment of the fourth instalment of advance tax for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The board emphasized that legitimate communications from the department are meant as facilitative reminders designed to help taxpayers review relevant financial information available on the official Compliance Portal.

These authentic reminders serve an important purpose: to ensure appropriate advance tax compliance where required. The department clarified that their communications are intended to assist taxpayers in meeting their obligations smoothly and efficiently.

How to Verify Your Transaction Details Correctly

The CBDT provided specific guidance for taxpayers who wish to verify their transaction details properly. Taxpayers should access the e-Campaign tab on the Compliance Portal, which is accessible through the official e-Filing portal. This is the only legitimate method to review and confirm transaction information related to advance tax obligations.

The department strongly advises against relying on any email communications that claim to provide transaction details or alert taxpayers to significant financial activities. Instead, taxpayers should use the official channels established by the Income Tax Department for all verification and compliance purposes.

Protecting Taxpayers from Potential Fraud

This proactive warning from the CBDT demonstrates the department's commitment to protecting taxpayers from potential fraud and misinformation. By alerting the public to these deceptive emails, authorities hope to prevent confusion and ensure that taxpayers can focus on meeting their legitimate tax obligations through proper channels.

The Income Tax Department continues to work with its service providers to resolve the issue completely and prevent similar incidents in the future. Taxpayers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious communications claiming to be from the tax authorities.
