India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections surged 32% in May 2025 compared to the same month last year, reaching Rs 1.94 lakh crore. This marks the fourth consecutive month that gross GST revenues have exceeded Rs 1.9 lakh crore, reflecting robust economic momentum and enhanced tax compliance.
Key Highlights of May GST Collections
The total GST revenue for May 2025 includes Rs 36,930 crore from Central GST (CGST), Rs 46,608 crore from State GST (SGST), Rs 97,288 crore from Integrated GST (IGST), and Rs 13,552 crore from cess. After regular settlements, the Centre and states received Rs 80,732 crore and Rs 82,460 crore respectively.
Strong Performance Across Components
All components of GST registered healthy growth. IGST collections were particularly robust, rising 38% year-on-year, while CGST and SGST grew by 28% and 27% respectively. Cess collections increased by 22% compared to May 2024.
- Domestic transactions (including imports) contributed Rs 1.94 lakh crore, up 32% from last year.
- Revenue from imports grew 28% to Rs 39,617 crore.
- The number of e-way bills generated in May was 10.2 crore, indicating strong interstate movement of goods.
Reasons Behind the Growth
Finance ministry officials attributed the rise to better tax compliance, anti-evasion measures, and increased consumption. The government's focus on digital infrastructure and simplified return filing has also improved voluntary compliance. Additionally, higher economic activity in sectors like manufacturing and services boosted tax revenues.
Impact on Fiscal Health
Sustained high GST collections provide fiscal space for the government to increase capital expenditure and reduce the fiscal deficit. The buoyant tax revenues also support the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy stance by indicating a strong demand environment.
Industry experts expect GST collections to remain above Rs 1.9 lakh crore in the coming months, driven by the festive season and continued economic expansion. However, global headwinds and monsoon uncertainties could pose risks to the growth trajectory.
