Traders in Jaipur have voiced strong objections to Urban Development (UD) tax notices issued by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC), highlighting that demands have been sent to establishments smaller than 100 square yards in prominent markets such as Chaura Rasta, Tripolia Bazaar, Johari Bazaar, and MI Road.
Widespread Discontent Among Shopkeepers
The traders expressed frustration, noting that many properties are exempt under existing rules, yet the notices show dues amounting to lakhs of rupees. Some notices even include dues dating back to 2007, affecting shops that were purchased after that year.
Concerns Raised by Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh
Subhash Goyal, President of the Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh, emphasized the issue, stating, "Even a 33 square yards shop is receiving notices. Many buildings have multiple shops, but JMC does not conduct physical surveys. As a result, notices are being sent for lakhs of rupees in the name of one or two registered shops. Several shops opened after 2007; it is incorrect to include old dues in these notices."
JMC's Assurance and Proposed Solutions
On Thursday, members of the Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh met with JMC Commissioner Gaurav Saini, who assured them that incorrect notices will be verified, and no trader will face harassment. Saini announced, "Meetings will be held in every market along with senior officials, and camps will be set up to resolve issues on the spot."
Official Response and Legal Framework
Revenue DC-1 Manoj Kumar Verma explained, "After receiving a notice, traders are given 15 days to raise objections, but most do not. The errors that occurred will now be corrected." The state government had issued a notification under Section 102 of the Rajasthan Municipal Act, 2009, in 2016, which exempts residential plots up to 300 square yards, commercial shops up to 100 square yards, and flats up to 1,500 square feet from UD tax.
This move aims to address the discrepancies and ensure fair treatment for all traders in Jaipur.
