Massive Cash Haul During Routine Vehicle Check
In a significant operation, the Selvapuram police in Coimbatore confiscated a substantial amount of unaccounted money, totaling Rs 60 lakh, on Friday night. The seizure occurred during a standard vehicle inspection near the Selva Chinthamani Tank area.
The police became suspicious when a scooter rider, upon seeing the checkpoint, abruptly made a U-turn. This evasive action prompted the officers to chase and successfully intercept the vehicle.
Identity and Journey of the Intercepted Rider
The rider was identified as Ganesh Chindey, a 24-year-old from Maharashtra. Investigations revealed that Chindey is employed at a relative's jewellery store located in Palakkad, Kerala.
According to police interrogations, Chindey had arrived in Coimbatore earlier on Friday with 428 grams of gold. He sold this gold at a shop inside Big Bazaar and was allegedly on his way back to Palakkad with the sale proceeds when he was stopped.
Failure to Explain Source Leads to IT Handover
Upon being questioned, Ganesh Chindey could not provide any legitimate documents or a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the large cash sum. The police found the money stashed under the seat of his scooter.
Following the initial investigation, the Selvapuram police formally handed over the accused individual, the seized cash amounting to Rs 60 lakh, and the scooter to the Income Tax Department officials for further action. The case is now under the purview of the tax authorities who will probe the matter of unaccounted wealth.
This incident highlights the vigilance of the local police during routine checks and underscores the ongoing efforts to track the movement of unexplained money. The Income Tax Department is expected to investigate the origins of the gold and the cash to determine if any financial laws were violated.
