Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Embraces Advanced Planning for Major Infrastructure Push
In a strategic move to accelerate public infrastructure development ahead of the highly anticipated 2030 Commonwealth Games, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is implementing rigorous pre-construction measures to eliminate delays and enhance project foresight. The city is preparing to construct flyovers at 35 critical junctions, but this initiative comes with a proactive approach to avoid the typical chaos caused by unforeseen underground obstacles.
Ground-Penetrating Radar Surveys to Map Subsurface Utilities
To prevent construction setbacks, AMC plans to conduct comprehensive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. This advanced technology will enable deep mapping of underground water lines, drainage networks, power cables, and telecom ducts before finalizing flyover designs. A proposal to appoint a consultant for these surveys will be presented at the AMC roads and buildings committee meeting this Friday.
An anonymous AMC official emphasized the urgency, stating, "With only four years remaining until the Commonwealth Games, our priority is to complete GPR survey reports to ensure timely project execution. Underground utilities will be relocated based on these findings before any flyover tenders are approved."
Learning from Past Challenges to Streamline Future Projects
The decision follows lessons from previous projects, such as the two-decked flyover at Iskcon Junction, where feasibility reports indicated potential demolition of two BRTS bus stations, leading to plan halts. After consultations, officials have mandated utility relocation before issuing work orders, even for tenders already finalized. Similarly, the Silver Star Crossroads flyover tender in Chandlodia awaits approval pending utility adjustments per bridge design.
The CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) conducted traffic movement surveys at the 35 junctions and recommended GPR surveys as a prerequisite for starting flyover or underpass work. This prioritization underscores AMC's commitment to efficient connectivity solutions, including a double-height elevated corridor from Kharicut Canal near Odhav fire station to Kathwada Ring Road Junction and the Indore Highway approach.
This systematic approach aims to transform Ahmedabad's infrastructure landscape, ensuring smooth project delivery and minimizing public inconvenience during the construction phase.
