Amazon India Reports Significant Growth in Ready-to-Consume Food Categories
E-commerce giant Amazon India has experienced a substantial increase in demand for convenient, ready-to-consume meal solutions, with specific categories showing remarkable growth patterns. According to company data, instant noodles, packaged meals, snacks, and beverages have collectively recorded over 15 percent growth on the Amazon.in platform in recent weeks.
Broad-Based Demand Across Urban and Rural Markets
The surge in demand is not confined to major metropolitan areas but extends across diverse geographical regions. Major urban centers including Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai have shown strong uptake, while tier-2 and tier-3 cities such as Sonipat and Panaji have demonstrated similar patterns of increased purchasing behavior.
"Over the past few weeks, we have observed consistent growth in demand for convenient, ready-to-consume meal solutions that require minimal cooking time," stated an Amazon India spokesperson. "Categories such as instant noodles, packaged meals, snacks and beverages are seeing over 15 per cent growth on Amazon.in."
Quick Commerce Vertical Shows Even Stronger Performance
The demand is particularly pronounced on Amazon's quick commerce platform, Amazon Now. Sales of ready-to-eat and packaged foods through this service have increased approximately 20 percent month-on-month. This growth is primarily driven by customers in select parts of Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru who are increasingly relying on rapid delivery services for immediate consumption needs.
Alongside this rise in quick-convenience shopping, Amazon India has reported sustained momentum in planned grocery purchases. Categories including staples, oils, beverages, and dry fruits continue to demonstrate strong traction, reflecting a balanced consumer shift toward both instant convenience and essential stocking behaviors.
Amazon's Strategic Response to Changing Consumer Patterns
To address this dual demand for immediate and planned grocery shopping, Amazon India has introduced a curated 'Ready to Eat Store' designed to consolidate high-quality meal solutions in a single, easily accessible location. This strategic move aims to streamline the shopping experience for consumers seeking convenient food options.
Underlying Factors: LPG Shortage and Geopolitical Tensions
The increased demand for ready-to-consume meals coincides with significant disruptions in India's LPG supply chain. Preliminary industry data reveals that LPG consumption in India dropped 17.7 percent during the first half of March, primarily due to supply disruptions stemming from geopolitical conflicts in West Asia.
More specifically, LPG consumption fell to 1.147 million tonnes during the first fortnight of March, representing a 17.3 percent decrease compared to the 1.387 million tonnes consumed during the same period last year. This figure also marks a 26.3 percent decline from the 1.557 million tonne demand recorded in the first half of February.
India imports approximately 60 percent of its LPG requirements, with a substantial portion passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This critical shipping route has experienced significant disruptions following military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Government Response and Industry Adjustments
In response to the developing situation, the central government has pledged to increase supplies of commercial LPG to states that accelerate the rollout of piped gas networks. This measure aims to alleviate pressure on cooking fuel availability across the country.
"Situation remains a matter of concern, but we are providing supplies as before to domestic consumers," confirmed Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
This continuity in domestic supply has been made possible through directives to refineries to ramp up domestic output, with priority given to household kitchens. While commercial use of LPG in establishments such as hotels and restaurants was initially curtailed, it has since been restored to approximately one-fifth of normal offtake levels.
The convergence of these factors—geopolitical tensions affecting fuel supplies, government policy responses, and changing consumer behavior—has created a unique market environment where e-commerce platforms like Amazon India are witnessing unprecedented demand for convenient food solutions that minimize cooking requirements.
