Andhra Pradesh's Massive Green Energy Project Reaches Construction Milestone
A massive $10 billion green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh is approaching a significant construction milestone. This development strengthens India's position as an emerging global supplier of clean energy to international markets including Germany, Japan and Singapore.
Key Ceremony Scheduled with Top Leadership
The first major equipment erection ceremony for AM Green's Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Complex will take place on January 17. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Konidala Pawan Kalyan are expected to attend the event, according to state government officials.
This project represents one of the largest clean-energy investments in India's history. The $10 billion outlay is projected to create approximately 8,000 jobs during the construction phase alone. Additionally, it will generate substantial high-skill employment during operations and across related sectors such as renewable energy, logistics, storage and port services.
World's Largest Green Ammonia Complex
AM Green is developing India's first and the world's largest green ammonia complex at Kakinada. The facility will have a planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year. The company is achieving this through brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia-urea facility.
The project will be commissioned in multiple phases:
- Initial capacity of 0.5 million tonnes per year by 2027
- Expansion to 1 million tonnes per year by 2028
- Full capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year by 2030
Enabling India's First Green Ammonia Exports
Once operational, this facility will enable India's first exports of green ammonia. This clean fuel is gaining global adoption for multiple applications:
- Clean shipping fuel
- Power generation
- Carrier for green hydrogen
The integrated project encompasses substantial infrastructure:
- 7.5 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity
- 1,950 megawatts of electrolyser capacity
- 2 gigawatts of round-the-clock renewable power
This infrastructure will be supported by pumped hydro storage, including India's first such facility at Pinnapuram in Andhra Pradesh.
Strong International Partnerships
AM Green has already secured long-term supply agreements with Germany-based utility Uniper. The company is also in advanced discussions with potential buyers in Japan and Singapore. These agreements establish India's first green-energy export linkages with Europe and advanced Asian economies.
The project aligns perfectly with Andhra Pradesh's Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024. This policy aims to position the state as India's primary hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia. Once fully commissioned, the facility is expected to mark a structural shift from energy import dependence toward clean-energy exports. This development places Andhra Pradesh at the center of the global green-energy value chain.
Global Backing and Comprehensive Ecosystem
AM Green is backed by the founders of the Greenko Group. The company is developing the project through AM Green Ammonia, a partnership involving several international entities:
- Malaysia-based Gentari
- Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC
- The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority
Construction at the Kakinada site is already underway. This places the project among a limited set of large-scale green ammonia facilities globally that meet Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards.
Beyond production, the project showcases an end-to-end clean-energy ecosystem within a single state. This comprehensive approach includes:
- Large-scale renewable generation
- Round-the-clock green power backed by storage
- Hydrogen and ammonia production
- Port-based export infrastructure
Strengthening Global Energy Corridors
AM Green has actively worked to strengthen global linkages. In May last year, the company announced a partnership with the Port of Rotterdam Authority. This collaboration aims to create a dedicated green-fuel corridor linking India with north-western Europe. The corridor could enable annual trade of up to 1 million tonnes of green fuels valued at nearly $1 billion.
Earlier, AM Green partnered with global logistics firm DP World to develop green fuel storage and export facilities in India and overseas.
The state government emphasized the project's strategic importance, stating: "This is not merely an industrial project, but a strategic step in positioning Andhra Pradesh and India as leaders in clean-energy exports and climate action."
This development represents a significant advancement in India's clean energy ambitions. The Kakinada project positions the country as a serious contender in the global green energy market while creating substantial economic opportunities within Andhra Pradesh.
