Aurobindo Pharma's TheraNym Biologics Fortifies MSD Collaboration with Major Investment
In a significant development for the pharmaceutical industry, Aurobindo Pharma announced on Wednesday that its subsidiary, TheraNym Biologics Pvt Ltd, has enhanced its partnership with Merck Sharpe & Dohme Singapore Trading Pte Ltd (MSD). This move involves executing an additional product schedule under their existing contract manufacturing organization (CMO) agreement, which was originally established in May 2024.
Substantial Investment in New Manufacturing Facility
Under the newly signed product schedule, TheraNym Biologics is set to invest approximately $150 million to $175 million in establishing a greenfield, large-scale drug substance manufacturing facility. This state-of-the-art plant, to be named TheraNym Unit 2, will be equipped with mammalian cell culture bioreactors boasting a capacity of around 60,000 litres. Additionally, it will feature advanced downstream purification infrastructure essential for high-quality drug substance production.
Expanding Biologics Production for Global Markets
The primary objective of this facility is to manufacture biologics for both domestic and international markets. According to Aurobindo Pharma, TheraNym will construct and operate the manufacturing facility to produce these products, which will then be supplied to MSD as per the terms of their arrangement. This initiative is expected to significantly expand the existing CMO relationship between Aurobindo Pharma's arm and MSD, focusing specifically on biologicals.
This strategic expansion underscores Aurobindo Pharma's commitment to advancing its capabilities in the biologics sector, positioning it as a key player in the global pharmaceutical landscape. The investment not only strengthens the collaboration with MSD but also enhances India's role in the production of critical biologics, catering to growing demand worldwide.
