Bhopal Metro Project Enters Critical Underground Phase with TBM Deployment
The Bhopal Metro project has reached a pivotal milestone as tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been strategically positioned to commence excavation on the underground segment of the Orange Line. This development marks the initiation of one of the most technically demanding phases in the city's metro infrastructure expansion.
Technical Details of the Orange Line Underground Stretch
The Orange Line spans approximately 15 kilometers from the Karond intersection to AIIMS Bhopal, featuring a combination of elevated and underground sections. While the elevated priority corridor between Subhash Nagar and AIIMS was inaugurated in December 2025, focus has now shifted to the subterranean works near key urban nodes including Bhopal Railway Station, Nadra Bus Stand, and Pul Bogda.
Officials from the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) have confirmed that the TBMs are being lowered into launch shafts and prepared for continuous boring operations. These massive machines, each weighing several hundred tonnes, will carve twin tunnels designed to accommodate metro tracks and facilitate passenger movement.
Engineering Challenges and Urban Considerations
The underground tunneling in these dense urban zones requires precision engineering to minimize disruption to daily life and safeguard heritage structures. Project engineers have highlighted several challenges including variable soil conditions and potential water ingress, but emphasized that modern TBM technology is specifically designed to handle such variable geology with minimal surface impact.
"This is where the metro truly goes beneath the city, ensuring faster travel without disturbing surface life," explained a project engineer involved in the initiative. "The deployment of TBMs represents a turning point for Bhopal's infrastructure ambitions."
Project Timeline and Broader Metro Vision
Once the tunneling operations commence, officials anticipate completing this underground stretch in approximately three months. The Orange Line constitutes part of Bhopal's larger metro vision, with the current two-phase development encompassing both the Orange and Blue lines expected to reach completion within about two years.
Urban planners emphasize that once operational, the underground section will provide significant benefits including:
- Reduced congestion in the city's busiest transit hubs
- Seamless connectivity between residential and commercial clusters
- Enhanced transportation efficiency across urban corridors
- Minimal disruption to existing surface infrastructure
The successful implementation of this underground phase is viewed as crucial for transforming Bhopal's urban mobility landscape and establishing a modern, efficient public transportation system that can serve the city's growing population and economic needs.
