In a board of directors meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation, chaired by the Chief Minister on April 1, the board approved the revised alignment of the west Bhopal bypass and granted in-principle approval for its construction. The project was initially slated to take off in 2023 but faced significant setbacks due to environmental concerns and allegations that influential individuals had purchased land around the proposed highway route.
Government authorities have now stated that all major hurdles have been cleared, and Bhopal is expected to receive its much-awaited ring road within the next two years. Top government officials emphasize that ground-level work will begin in the coming months, signaling a swift transition from planning to execution.
Route Specifications and Safety Features
The 35.61-kilometer western highway will commence near Mandideep on the Bhopal and Mandideep road and conclude on the Indore Road close to the village of Phanda Kalan. The design includes four lanes along with a paved shoulder—a stabilized, all-weather surface adjacent to the main traffic lanes, typically constructed with asphalt or concrete.
