Bihar Government Initiates Major Sugar Mill Revival Project
The sugar cane industries department in Bihar has taken a decisive step to rejuvenate the state's agricultural economy by reserving sugarcane from a total of 2,401 villages across Darbhanga and Madhubani districts. This strategic move is aimed at ensuring a steady and sufficient supply of raw material for the proposed revival of two long-closed sugar mills: the Sakri mill in Madhubani and the Raiyam mill in Darbhanga.
Detailed Allocation of Sugarcane Supply
According to an official statement released on Friday, the allocation has been meticulously planned to balance the needs of both mills. Farmers from 1,018 villages will be directed to supply their sugarcane to the Raiyam sugar mill located in Darbhanga. Meanwhile, farmers from 1,383 villages will provide sugarcane to the Sakri sugar mill situated in Madhubani.
This initiative is designed to prevent any supply shortages and support the operational efficiency of the mills once they are back in production. The official emphasized that the step was crucial to guarantee an adequate and reliable flow of sugarcane, which is the lifeblood of these processing units.
Village-Wise Breakdown for Enhanced Clarity
The department has provided a more granular breakdown of the village allocations to ensure transparency and smooth implementation:
- For the Sakri sugar mill in Madhubani, farmers from 686 villages within Madhubani district and 697 villages in Darbhanga district have been earmarked to supply sugarcane.
- For the Raiyam sugar mill in Darbhanga, the supply will come from 438 villages in Madhubani district and 580 villages in Darbhanga district.
This detailed distribution underscores the government's commitment to leveraging local agricultural resources effectively, benefiting farmers across both districts.
Cooperative Department to Oversee Operations
Both the Sakri and Raiyam sugar mills, which have been non-operational for some time, are set to be revived and managed under the auspices of the state's cooperative department. This cooperative model is expected to foster greater community involvement and ensure that the revival efforts align with the interests of local farmers and stakeholders.
The revival of these mills is anticipated to boost the regional economy by creating employment opportunities, enhancing sugarcane cultivation, and reducing dependency on external sugar supplies. It represents a significant step towards revitalizing Bihar's agro-industrial sector and supporting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in Darbhanga and Madhubani.
