Improper Car AC Use in Summer Can Harm Cooling and Fuel Efficiency, Experts Caution
In Lucknow, as temperatures soar during peak summer, improper use of a car's air-conditioning system can lead to reduced cooling, lower fuel efficiency, and increased engine load, according to automotive experts. They advise motorists to adopt conducive practices to optimize performance and avoid common pitfalls.
Avoid Common Mistakes for Better AC Performance
A frequent error is switching on the AC immediately after entering the car. Experts recommend rolling down the windows for a few minutes to release the heated air trapped inside the cabin. This simple step helps lower the initial temperature, making the cooling process more effective.
Once the hot air is expelled, start by running the fan at high speed before activating the AC with the windows closed. This method promotes faster cooling by allowing the system to work more efficiently from the outset.
Optimal Settings and Maintenance Tips
Keeping the temperature around 24 degrees Celsius and using the recirculation mode after the cabin has cooled can significantly improve efficiency. Direct airflow should be avoided to prevent strain on the system and ensure consistent comfort.
Ubaid Khan, an automobile workshop owner in Lucknow, explained that cars parked in direct sunlight heat up rapidly, trapping hot air inside. "This increases pressure on the AC compressor and reduces cooling efficiency," he said. High cabin temperatures affect the condenser's ability to release heat, while higher refrigerant pressure adds to system strain. This results in slower cooling, frequent AC cycling, reduced pickup, and a 5-15% drop in mileage, especially in heavy traffic conditions.
Anil Verma, a dealership supervisor, emphasized the importance of regular maintenance. "Dirty filters, low refrigerant levels, and dust accumulation on the condenser can severely reduce AC performance," he noted. Experts advise servicing the system twice a year, particularly before the summer season, to ensure optimal functionality and longevity.
Proactive Measures for Summer Driving
By following these guidelines, drivers can enhance their car's cooling efficiency, conserve fuel, and reduce wear on the engine. Simple adjustments in AC usage and timely maintenance are key to navigating the summer heat effectively while minimizing operational costs.
