Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy has stated that coal gasification is set to trigger a new revolution in India's energy sector, significantly enhancing the country's industrial self-reliance. Speaking at a conference on coal gasification, Reddy emphasized that this technology will reduce India's dependence on imported natural gas and crude oil, thereby strengthening the nation's energy security.
Strategic Importance of Coal Gasification
Coal gasification is a process that converts coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which can be used for power generation, production of fertilizers, and as a feedstock for various chemicals. The minister highlighted that India has vast coal reserves, and utilizing them through gasification will not only create jobs but also promote a cleaner use of coal. He noted that the government has launched several initiatives to promote coal gasification, including financial incentives and policy support.
Government Initiatives and Investments
The government has allocated significant funds for research and development in coal gasification technologies. Public sector undertakings like Coal India Limited are actively involved in setting up gasification plants. Reddy mentioned that the Ministry of Coal has identified multiple projects across the country, with an estimated investment of over Rs 20,000 crore in the coming years. These projects are expected to produce syngas for use in steel, cement, and chemical industries, reducing the need for imports.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
Coal gasification is considered a cleaner alternative to traditional coal combustion, as it allows for the capture of pollutants and carbon dioxide. The minister stressed that this technology aligns with India's commitment to reducing carbon emissions while ensuring energy availability for economic growth. Additionally, the use of domestic coal will save foreign exchange and create a robust ecosystem for ancillary industries.
Reddy concluded by urging industry stakeholders to collaborate with the government to accelerate the adoption of coal gasification, calling it a game-changer for India's energy landscape. He expressed confidence that this initiative will propel India towards greater self-sufficiency and industrial growth.
