Crane Collapse at Mumbai Metro Construction Site Causes Major Disruption

A major accident occurred at an under-construction metro site in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) near Diamond Market on Wednesday, when a crane toppled and a heavy girder collapsed, triggering widespread panic and severe traffic disruptions across the area.

Incident Details and Immediate Aftermath

The incident took place during the installation of a metro bridge beam when the crane reportedly lost its balance, causing the massive structure to crash onto machinery positioned below. While no fatalities were reported, several workers sustained injuries in the chaotic collapse.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene immediately, cordoning off the affected area and initiating comprehensive rescue and clearance operations. Vehicular movement in the vicinity was promptly diverted to ensure public safety and facilitate emergency access.

Official Statement and Investigation

MMRDA director Basavaraj MB provided detailed insights into the incident, stating, "Work is going on in full swing. This is line 2B, from D N Nagar to Mandale work, and there is a station called ILFS station at BKC. A precast element air action was planned last night. While lifting the gear, the crane failed due to a mechanical failure, and the load fell onto the other crane. We were using 2 cranes. The precast element fell down, and the operation was stopped immediately."

He further elaborated on the response measures, "We rushed to the site, called all the people, and brought another 600 metric ton crane to remove the existing element and the crane. No one has been injured here, and there are no accidents... We will conduct the inquiry... The company was J Kumar Infrastructure."

Impact and Ongoing Operations

The collapse has raised significant concerns about construction safety protocols at major infrastructure projects in Mumbai. The immediate stoppage of operations and the deployment of additional heavy machinery highlight the seriousness of the incident.

Traffic authorities continue to manage the diverted vehicular flow as clearance operations proceed. The inquiry initiated by authorities will focus on determining the exact cause of the mechanical failure and assessing compliance with safety regulations.

This developing story underscores the challenges faced in Mumbai's ambitious metro expansion projects and the critical importance of stringent safety measures at construction sites.
