Amritsar: In a major operation, customs officials at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport have confiscated over 1.6 kilograms of 24-carat gold, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 2.6 crore, from a passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur.
Details of the Seizure
According to a social media post by Amritsar Customs, the passenger arrived on Malaysia Airlines flight MH-119 from Kuala Lumpur. Upon arrival, the individual was intercepted by customs officers for a thorough inspection. During a detailed search, which included personal frisking and baggage examination, officials recovered 1,676 grams of 24K gold cleverly concealed in the form of a kada (a traditional bangle) and a gold biscuit.
Legal Action Taken
The gold was seized under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act. Following the recovery, the passenger was placed under arrest and is currently in custody. Further investigations are underway to determine the source and intended destination of the gold.
This seizure highlights the vigilance of customs authorities in preventing illegal smuggling of precious metals. The airport has been on high alert, and such operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb gold smuggling through international routes.
